In the past ten years, the arts in Kansas City have again been riding an upswing, largely due to the reclamation power of the arts, particularly in the Crossroads district. The district became home to more than 60 art businesses and organizations, with developers and architects very cautiously following the artists’ lead.

While some pieces were puerile from idea to execution (yes some involved feces, and some involved penii…but hey, what is art school, but a place to grow, develop, and mature?), several were notable in their invitation for viewers to interact with them.

If you think this is going to be a cynical, sour-grapes diatribe about the gulf between the haves and have-nots, think again. The Contemporary is throwing down a gauntlet to the general population.

These intimately sized works shine with more brilliance than the super-sized trappings which so often pass for contemporary art. It takes some cajones to admit that big and brash is not always better.

It is not expected that Louisville will become the next big art destination overnight. But the impetus has begun, and other developers are starting to look at downtown with a gleam in their eyes.

One of the most apt descriptions of Putrih's work is that it effects "deformed perceptions." He plays with viewers' expectations and assumptions.
