“Once upon a dream,” thanks to a little Christmas magic, every ornament on the holiday tree sprang to life! From the toy soldier to the jester to Elvis and skipping reindeer, the entire gang took the stage, and what followed was wonderfully whimsical!

The festive friends of Cirque Dreams Holidaze prove act after act that they’re an astoundingly talented assortment. A young girl, who could bend like a ragdoll, and her assistant, a larger than life nutcracker skillfully strutting the stage on stilts, immediately awed the audience. Although there is no real storyline propelling the show, its charming characters often sing through the scenes and the vocals are spectacular! For all of you who have been humming Christmas music since the day after Halloween, rest assured there are some classics thrown into the mix, including “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” featuring some of the most remarkable rollerblading I’ve ever seen and “Walking in a Winter Wonderland,” which was more like “Jump Roping in a Winter Wonderland,” thanks to those skipping reindeer I mentioned earlier.

With each new stunt, my jaw dropped lower and lower in disbelief at what I was witnessing! The terrific tightrope walker and amazing acrobats brought the show to new heights. There were audible “ow’s” in the audience as the contortionists tucked themselves into tricky positions, and anxiety levels skyrocketed as several performers attempted stunts that could have been utterly detrimental with the slightest misstep. The evening wouldn’t have been complete without a quick-change act, which is one mystery I’ve never been able to wrap my mind around. (I’m sure there are videos explaining this trick online, but I’ve avoided them. I don’t want to spoil the magic for myself!)

This show was created with families in mind, and it delivers with one exception—a few unnecessarily skimpy outfits. I’m not typically one to comment on scantily clad characters, but, with an abundance of children in the crowd, neither the quick-change act nor the aerial silks scene warranted the amount of skin shown. With that being said, for the most part, the costuming was as cute as could be! Basically, there wasn’t one component of the costuming and staging that appeared untouched by a giant bedazzler. This show absolutely shined, literally and figuratively! | Megan Washausen
