The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees for 2016

On the roster this year are Pearl Jam, Journey, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Joan Baez, and Tupac Shakur.

Located in Cleveland, Ohio, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced its inductees for 2016. On the roster this year are grunge favorites Pearl Jam, pop-rockers Journey, the progressive sound of Yes, ’70s stalwarts, Electric Light Orchestra, the folk stylings of Joan Baez, and Tupac Shakur, the first ever hip-hop solo artist to be inducted.

Things are a little different this time around, with all but one of the acts being nominated for the first time. (Only Yes had been previously nominated.) To be qualified for nomination, a band or artist must have released their first single or album at least 25 years ago. Ballots are sent out in October to over 900 musicians and historians, including those who have already been placed in the HoF.

Yet, this year is not without controversy. For the first time in history, a solo hip-hop artist has won the nomination. Not only was Tupac been found eligible for the HoF, he is one of this year’s featured artists. When it comes to hip-hop, only four other artists have made the ballot: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in 2007, Run DMC in 2009, The Beastie Boys in 2012 and Public Enemy in 2013. Some question the inclusion of rap and hip-hop in the Hall, saying that it is not rock ’n’ roll and should therefore not be included. The disco act Chic has been nominated many times, but has never been inducted; cofounder Nile Rodgers, however, who has worked with the likes of Diana Ross and David Bowie, will be awarded the Musical Excellence Award for 2016.

A diverse group of masterful musicians will be etched in musical history forever by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. From folk to grunge, hard rock to progressive rock, and even hip hop, all rock genres are represented this year. | Marc Farr
