Misery Obscura: The Photography of Eerie Von (1981–2009) (Bazillion Points)

The Misfits were different from most punk bands; image was very important to them.

In the world of punk rock, one of the most influential bands is, without a doubt, The Misfits. Coming together in Lodi, New Jersey, in 1977, lead singer Glenn Danzig, bassist Jerry Only, and drummer Manny Martinez started the spark that would live on through many different lineups over the last 30 years. The original band disbanded in 1983, with vocalist Danzig forming Samhain. This band made several albums, based on Danzig’s lyrics, which are inspired by B-movies, science fiction, and horror films. It took 33 years for the original members to come back together, performing at Riot Fest in Denver in September 2016.

Now, we get a visual look at the band from someone who was there. Eerie Von, the original bass player for Samhain, brings us a collection to die for: photos of Samhain, The Misfits, and Danzig, live and uncensored. These are never-before-seen snapshots of all three bands hard at work. Also included is a sort of timeline, starting with pictures from his high school days.

The quality of the photographs is surprisingly good, providing flashbacks to a time when horror punk was new and gaining stride. The Misfits were different from most punk bands; image was very important to them. Their pre-gothic look, which also bled over into Samhain, became all the rage in the early 1980s, and its relevance is still felt today. The legacy of the band will go down in punk history. They are influential, even to metal acts like Wednesday 13 and Australia’s Darkcell.

This book is a fan’s treasure. Any aficionado of any of the three bands would love to own this pictorial piece of history, a must-have for any Misfits fan. B+ | Marc Farr
