And I mean this as a compliment, there is some serious 70s love going on here that reminds me of some Journey, maybe a bit of Queen, and, God help me, Styx.

I read somewhere that Social Hero are here "to rock as hard as we can." I chuckled because I believe bands have been saying that since...well, "rock" started meanings something other than a geological term. Listening to their album The Famous I realized that Social Hero is a band that truly believes they are living up to the motto and their sound is oddly classic. Really, this band could have fallen out of my '68 Barricuda. And I mean this as a compliment, there is some serious 70s love going on here that reminds me of some Journey, maybe a bit of Queen, and, God help me, Styx. Not quite any of those bands at their height, but you can certainly hear the tight jeans and see the sway as the guitars battle for dominance.

The band name-checks Aerosmith and Warrant on their website and it is obvious that they have spent many hours dreaming away to those and many other rockers. The Famous seems to be a good start on the way to accomplishing that dream. They might consider holding back on lyrics like "take me to the show, I can't go, all I want to do is eat your face" which is from the song "Mosquito Attack." Honest, when I heard it I thought "what an awesome idea for a song - mosquito attack, some science fiction, kind of Yes-like." But no, the website tells me it is about the singer "poised to spend a night nibbling on his special lady's face." Ah, New York rockers, I miss you. Worth a spin. B | Jim Dunn
