Stand-up comedian Brian Regan returns to St. Louis for two shows (7 p.m. and 9 p.m.) on Saturday, September 12 at the Pageant. A long-time fan, I had the good fortune to interview Regan last year prior to his St. Louis show and found the "everyman’s funny man" to be as on top of his game as the first time I saw him at the Funnybone more than 10 years ago. Since his appearance here last year, Regan premiered his second Comedy Central special, The Epitome of Hyperbole.

Now I appreciate a good dirty joke as much as the next person, but it’s also nice to see a comedian who need only rely on his wit and keen observation of the world to get people laughing hysterically (well, that and a nearly elastic face that can elicit howls from a single expression). It’s no wonder Regan counts comic minds like Jerry Seinfeld and Mitch Hedberg among his inspirations.

One of eight kids in what he says was a generally funny family, Regan pulls material from his childhood experiences as well as the day-to-day intricacies of life. While other comedians use stand-up as a stepping-stone to TV and film careers, Regan is content on stage in front of a live audience.

"I have no interest in being a star," he told me. "I just like my comedy. I want my comedy to be famous."
