Armors | “Genesis” (s/r)

With songs like this, they should be playing with the big boys in no time.

This song is lovely. It begins with falsetto, and then slides into vocalist Olen Kittelsen’s smooth, soulful sound. The music is simple yet catchy, with a nonflashy blend of the basics: guitar, bass, synths, and drums. It’s a song about dreaming, achieving, believing—and losing. “I’d like to think we had it all,” Kittelsen sings, “and now we’re back to genesis.”

The trio from Orange County put out a five-song EP, Collisions, in 2015. “Genesis” is the new single-teaser in advance of a full-length due later this year. While Collisions was good in its own right, the new song elevates Armors to a level well beyond “indie band.” With songs like this, they should be playing with the big boys in no time. | Laura Hamlett
