Will Kimbrough | Wings (Daphne Records)

What is nice about these expressions is that they never sound forced or false, Kimbrough sounds happy, content..dare I say blessed?

Will Kimbrough has been around forever and a day in music. He rode the wave of alt-country in the 80s with Will and the Bushmen, performed solo for years, is an acclaimed producer (Todd Snider’s best work owes much to Kimbrough’s production), and his songwriting, always heartfelt, drew the attention of Jimmy Buffet last year who had Kimbrough co-write four songs for his Buffet Hotel album.

Kimbrough’s new album, Wings, is the work of a singer/songwriter who is both assured in his abilities and words. The album is a warm rush of emotions and stories that tend to find that soft spot in the listener. The song he penned with Buffet, "Wings," is a sweet dissertation on faith and fearlessness. Kimbrough is obviously a man who has found strength in his religious faith and the album is not shy in expressing it. What is nice about these expressions is that they never sound forced or false, Kimbrough sounds happy, content..dare I say blessed? That he is able to create such a joyous album is both refreshing and a tribute to his talent. Wings could easily have become overwrought, but instead it is a primer on living one’s life buoyantly. Another particularly nice track is "Let me be your frame" which Kimbrough co-wrote and sings duet with Sara Kelley.  The two balance each other’s musical strengths perfectly.

It is by no means a religious album and Kimbrough doesn’t treat it as one. It is a performer who has nothing to prove and everything to share that has the most to offer. Kimbrough is that performer. A | Jim Dunn

About Jim Dunn 126 Articles
Jim Dunn grew up in NY in the 70s and 80s. Even though that time in music really shapes his appreciation it does not define it. Music, like his beloved history is a long intermingled path that grows, builds and steals from its past. He lives in Colorado with his lovely wife and a wild bunch of animals.
