For over 45 years, the Rolling Stones have been at the top of the rock and roll mountain. Once they rose, they never fell, as so many other bands have. To be certain, many different genres of music have explored the depths of the classic songs from the British legends. From pop rock to symphonic orchestrations, the music of The Stones has been performed in tribute to the band’s greatness and time-space.

January saw the release of Stoned: A Psych Tribute to the Rolling Stones. Never having heard these timeless rock tunes done in such a manner, my interest was instantly aroused. Whether or not you are into electronic power punk and gothic music, this album takes you away on a wave of psychedelic joy. With 14 tracks to indulge in, some of the band’s biggest are represented, as well as some obscure B-side songs.

Available on both vinyl and CD formats, the CD hosts more tracks, including some of the biggest Stones hits. Spotlight tracks include “Sympathy for the Devil,” performed by the KVB. This version is dark and carnal sounding, the way I have always envisioned it to be, as the KVB breathes new gothic life into the song. Also included here is “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” redone for this compilation by Pink Velvet. Punked out and raw, it bursts from the speakers in true power-punk form. Pure X takes on “Beast of Burden” with a new romantic, almost Prince-like feel.

Overall, this release is quite fun. To hear these timeless rock songs done with dark, brooding synths and heavy guitars does them justice. From the first track ‘til the end of the journey, the listener is transported to another place, where colors bleed together and the dancers wear masks. Yes, it’s quite a trip. B | Marc Farr
