V/A | Keep Calm and Salute the Beatles (Cleopatra)

keepcalm sqWithout the four mop tops from Liverpool, where would we be?

Iconic voices from both sides of the sea have come together to pay a hearty vocal tribute to the legendary Beatles. The disc’s 16 acoustic tracks feature classic vocalists like Heart’s Ann Wilson, The Motels’ husky-toned Martha Davis, and even disco’s own Leo Sayer.

Produced by the legendary producer Billy Sherwood, some of the best of The Beatles catalogue is featured here. Asia’s John Wetton gives forth a passionate performance of “Penny Lane,” while Helen Reddy takes on “Love Is All You Need” with her patented style. Most moving is the haunting rendition of “Eleanor Rigby,” sublimely performed by the late Jack Bruce of Cream. This was his last recording before passing in late 2014, and is a testament to what a truly talented man he was.

Wilson delivers “Across the Universe” with her usual vocal prowess, while not being too powerful for the track. Eighties pop icon Howard Jones plays “And I Love Her,” coming across as a torch singer extraordinaire. The songs are sublime, in performance and production. A natural flow runs through the album, with each vocalist carving their own notch in the Beatles tribute belt.

This album is a must for any Beatles fan, or even those who enjoy the aforementioned talents. Few tribute albums are worth the price, but few feature such a roster of talent. This one stands above the rest, and is definitely worth every penny. So stay calm, and let’s salute the godfathers of rock ’n’ roll. For without the four mop tops from Liverpool, where would we be?
