The Best of The Guess Who (Audio Fidelity)

The-Best-of-the-Guess-Who 75This is a fantastic release by a well-loved band.

One of the most iconic albums of the 1970s is, without a doubt, The Best of The Guess Who. These 11 songs have become beloved to fans over the span of 40 years. This is one album that has truly stood the test of time, so what better release to get the digital makeover?

Many times over the span of years, different versions have altered the original track listing. This album holds true to the original roster, bringing with it the ethereal flow this album has always possessed. Listening to the songs on the radio, one can hear the next song coming on, even if the station goes to commercial.

From the first track, the beautifully remastered version of “These Eyes,” the recordings have been given the star treatment. Included here is a Multichannel Mix in SACD (Super Audio CD) Surround Sound, as well as the original two-channel stereo mixes in SACD stereo and CD stereo. The CD, known as a hybrid, combines the rechanneling and remastering of all the tracks, while leaving the original stereo mixes intact. (One must have a Multichannel SACD player and system for full effect.)

As for the songs…well, this is the best of a very underrated band. Included here are the classics “Laughing,” “Undun,” and “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature,” the hybrid song with two different vocal parts, later blended together. Also here is the classic-rock staple “American Woman,” complete with the acoustic beginning that was edited out of most versions of the album.

This is a fantastic release by a well-loved band. Completed with a nice poster, the packaging is not overdone. Simply put, this is a must-have for any classic rock fan. B+ | Marc Farr
