The Best Man Holiday: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (RCA Records)

Best-Man-Holiday 75The Best Man Holiday: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is a great follow up to the original The Best Man Soundtrack that told us love stories.

A holiday movie would not be complete without a soundtrack that introduces its audience to new holiday tunes, reintroduces classic Christmas songs, and provides a landscape for the movie’s events to unfold. The Best Man Holiday Soundtrack provides this and more.

Jordin Sparks kicks off the album with a sweet, upbeat rendition of “Christmas Time to Me” that will surely have its listeners rocking and excited for the joys of Christmas. “Someday at Christmas” gets a makeover by Mario with his soulful vocals that makes you really believe that someday at Christmas all of our dreams just may come true.

As a lover of The Best Man Holiday’s prequel, The Best Man Soundtrack, I expected nothing short of great R&B tunes to ignite all of the feelings held deep inside. The latter’s soundtrack, from 1999, featured love songs that pieced every scene together in the movie. It made you laugh, cry, and just feel overall joy inside. With Fantasia’s “What Christmas Means to Me,” Charlie Wilson’s “I Still Have You,” and R. Kelly’s “Christmas, I’ll be Steppin’” one thing’s for sure — your holiday season will be filled with love, smiles, and dancing.

A simple piano chord plays as John Legend pledges to be shelter through the storm for his loved one: “I’ll be your bridge over the water/ Fire when it’s cold, I’ll be the best friend you know/ Hey, I will be your shelter/ I will be your shelter/ I will be your shelter/ I will be your shelter through the storm.”

Monica’s version of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and Emeli Sandé’s “Winter Wonderland” are my favorites on this album. Both of their voices are just the right amount of richness sprinkled over the orchestra. Jayda Brown and Jasmine Watkins’ delicate redo of “O Holy Night” and Anthony Hamilton’s vocals on “As” are not to be forgotten either; simplistic and strong — the perfect combination for each tune.

The Best Man Holiday: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is a great follow up to the original The Best Man Soundtrack that told us love stories. This album tells us about the family created from that love. New Edition’s “Can You Stand the Rain” could serve as the premise of The Best Man series. In love, there will be hardships and triumphs — as Ne-Yo sings about in “I Want to Come Home for Christmas” — that will put everything to the test, but ultimately the relationships you’ve built together will sustain you through the holiday and beyond.
