Siftercide | “Self-Titled” (Nailjar)

SifterCideAs the tracks progress quickly, the listener hears more than the growling vocals, high gain guitars (and bass!)…there’s something else.

Siftercide is a bit of a conundrum. I do not know from where they hail. I know they have been around since the year 2000, and their current incarnation started in 2012. They have no names. They are simply Siftercide.

This group is pure grindcore. They are even more grind than the mighty Napalm Death. (Ba-ba-buh-ba)! What was that sound like…? True grindcore is shorter than punk and meaner than a wounded snake. They have that.

Their songs are heavy, thick, and short! This album clocks in at less than 25 minutes, or less than one “Reign In Blood.” It boasts 19 songs. Do that math.

Where it gets strange is that this is not standard grindcore power trio lineup, and I don’t know how many they have, but as the tracks progress quickly, the listener hears more than the growling vocals, high gain guitars (and bass!)…there’s something else.

It’s a horn section.

(Now that this has set in, we may continue). It’s very different and rather amazing how the devil’s trumpets and angel’s trombones can keep up and be heard. They are just another part of the wall of sound that is Siftercide.

Self-Titled is a great introduction to a new type of band that hopefully will keep us guessing for years to come. Listen with an open mind. | Nik Cameron
