Sebadoh | Defend Yourself (Joyful Noise)

Sebadoh 75Good music from a band that may still hit their stride…if they stay together long enough.

It has been a 28-year ride for the Indie-Rock Kings of Lo Fi, Sebadoh. It has also been 14 years since the band’s last release, The Sebadoh. Finally releasing Defend Yourself in 2013, the band is now hitting the road. Playing the Off Broadway Nightclub on Sept. 23, vocalist/bassist Lou Barlow, guitarist Jason Lowenstein, and drummer Bob D’Amico have had plenty of time to prepare for this tour.

Known as “Lo-Fi” rock, the band specializes in Low Fidelity recording techniques. Combined with a classic feel, yet a neo-riff delivery, Sebadoh creates a nice mix of classic and modern rock ‘n roll. Lyrically, the band is baroque and more in-between the lines. Spotlight tracks here are “I Will,” with an elegant guitar intro and a Beatle-esque melody and structure — a track about being careful what you wish for. “Love You Here” is a longing tune reminding the listener that one can’t be everywhere. The production is definitely lo-fi, but sounds great. The songs here are in sync with each other, and glide well from one to the next.

Also included in its spotlight tracks is the title track, “Defend Yourself.” Grungy and on the tail of a Pearl Jam-type sound, the song shines, though the production factors do not. The vocals could be a bit clearer here, but the track still stands tall.

Overall, good music from a band that may still hit their stride…if they stay together long enough.

Sebadoh will be performing at the Off Broadway Nightclub on Sept. 23, 2014. Tickets are still available. B- | Marc Farr
