Nostalghia | Chrysalis (110)

Overall, Nostalghia give the listener a lot to think about without being overly dramatic.

Ciscandra Nostalghia’s last name is very appropriate. Listening to her band’s newest release, Chrysalis, many different artists cross the mind. Shades of Siouxsie Sioux, Kate Bush, and The Dresden Dolls come over you, yet there is originality here. Reminiscent of NIN, Marilyn Manson, and newer artists like In This Moment, Nostalghia are one of the new bands feeding the recent onslaught of female vocalists fronting electronica and metal bands as of late. This is no copy of any past artist, but a work of obviously influenced, yet original music. The 11-track offering includes previously released songs, coupled with new material, making for a very interesting musical journey.

While the overall atmosphere of this album is very noir, it does have its lighter moments, though not many. The key here lies in Ciscandra’s lyrics, which are cryptic, dark, and personal. Due to tracks like “Stockholm Syndrome,” which takes the listener to a dark place where one wishes for death, and “Homeostasis,” which chronicles the morphing from lover to killer, Nostalghia is not for the faint of heart. Eerily melodic, with haunting strings and drums that are myopic and empty, Nostalghia come equipped with all that Electronic Noir has to offer, and they do it well.

Spotlight tracks here are “Homeostasis,” “You + I” (the first single from the album),”Sunshiny Milk,” and the title track. The production is crisp, while not being too studio slick; the drama is natural and attractive. In other words, grab yourself some Nostalghia—drift back in time while remaining in the present.
