Lenny Kravitz | Strut (Roxie/Kobalt Label)

cd Lenny-KravitzWith rock, pop, neo-soul, psychedelia, and hard rock, Strut shines like a lighthouse through a foggy night.

The Grammy-winning musician, songwriter, and producer is back with his tenth studio album, Strut. This is the first release for Kravitz on his own label, Roxie Records, and it rocks!

With so many different genres running through his music, there is no true label that fits the multitalented performer. Kravitz has worked with some of the heavy hitters in the business, including Madonna, Slash, Aerosmith, David Bowie, and Lionel Richie, just to name a few. He has also been honored by France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters), as the French Minister of Culture named him an officer.

Now, he brings us a collection of neo-psychedelic rock tracks that pop from the very beginning. With an album packed with mega-melodies and a hard, funky edge, Kravitz really delivers the goods here. The new material is gritty, sexy, and honest, with a great flow and production (by the artist himself) that is not too slick. Strut blends many different styles, resulting in a kickass album.

The album opens with “Sex,” a funky track about…well, sex, that is also the second. The first single, “The Chamber,” is a dance-able, poppy, soulful song with a killer bass riff. Both are spotlight tracks, as well as “New York City,” an ode to the city that never sleeps and its strength; “The Pleasure and the Pain,” a bluesy, psychedelic ballad with a great guitar solo and a memorable chorus; and, finally, the title track, a funk-infused romp reminiscent of The Time. With rock, pop, neo-soul, psychedelia, and hard rock all in their places here, Strut shines like a lighthouse through a foggy night.

This is a great album by a continuing force in the industry. No one can deny the raw talent that Lenny Kravitz controls. Grab this CD and funkin’ get it on! A | Marc Farr
