Kate Pierson | Guitars and Microphones (Lazy Meadow/Kobalt)

Our favorite red-headed B-52, Kate Pierson, has finally released her long-awaited, highly anticipated solo album, leading one to pose the question: Does she have what it takes to be more than a B-52? The answer is a resounding “Hell, yeah!”

Guitars and Microphones has everything one would want from such a release, and much more. At age 66, Pierson is still vocally dynamic, her unique style shining through brightly. Bathed in melodic prose, with only half a hint of her B’s sound, this is all Kate, and it is a beautiful creation. So, for those looking for the B-52’s 2.0, or anything similar, keep looking; that is not what this release is about. What this album does bring is a side of the vocalist we have never had the chance to see before, save for a few guest appearances on other artists’ works (e.g., Iggy Pop and R.E.M.).

With all tracks co-written by Sia Furler, the album runs the gamut from rockers to beautiful ballads. Showcasing Pierson’s many musical talents (guitar, piano, percussion, and a “human theremin”), Guitars and Microphones is well-produced and well-performed. The production is slick and precise, and Pierson’s voice is sublime as it wraps around the lyrics like a lover.

Spotlight tracks include “Time Wave Zero,” the closest thing to a B-52’s track on the entire album—kooky and catchy, the track dances from the speakers, making you want to do the same; “Mister Sister,” a melodious ode to the struggles of being transsexual; and “Pulls You Under,” a fantastically performed ballad showing Kate in a most lovely light.

Overall, this is a great release that was well worth the wait. One hopes that this is not the last we hear from a solo Pierson. Will she tour for the album? We can only hope! A | Marc Farr
