Imagine this: It’s a Saturday evening in the heart of the Florida swampland with humidity so high, you can’t think without sweating. You climb a tree and are gazing into the Florida swampland, just amazed at this beautiful creation in front of you. You are completely mesmerized and taken aback by this natural beauty; it’s like the world around you is singing to you. You close your eyes and are lost in the music of the world around you.

Evening turns into night and with night, the real swampland comes to life. While walking home you stumble into a small roadhouse bar that is packed with the most beautiful people the swampland has to offer. The walls are pulsating with this sound; it’s a bit of blues, a bunch of funk, some rock ’n’ roll, and a whole lot of soul.

This orgy of sounds is starting to make your body sway back and forth, like you’re in a trance and you can’t stop moving. The next thing you know, you’re pressing bodies with some of the most gorgeous people you’ve ever met and you’re praying to God that this night doesn’t end.

Before you know it, you see a clock on the wall and 8 p.m. has turned into 2 a.m., and you realize that you’d better be sitting in that church pew at the 10 o’clock morning service. But the music has you and it won’t let you go, so you continue dancing the night away while welcoming the morning hours.

This is exactly what the latest effort from JJ Grey & Mofro, Ol’ Glory, will do to you. The musicianship has been taken to a new level on this album. Everything from those beating drums, big horns, funky bass, and sweet guitar riffs fall perfectly in place on an amazing album.

Lyrically, Ol’ Glory is beautifully written. It’s well worth it to sit back and listen to every single song without interruption. Don’t jump around between tracks. Listen to this straight through. You will not be disappointed at all.

I can’t give this album enough praise, if I had more than two thumbs, they’d all be pointing up. This is the best album to date by JJ Grey & Mofro. Seriously, pre-order this, or be sure to pick up your copy on February 24. And if you’re in the St. Louis area, make sure to head over to The Pageant on May 2and see them live. A| Adam Robinson
