Icona Pop | Iconic EP (Big Beat)

You want to talk about a dance-pop duo that makes you feel as though they have singlehandedly captured the essence of female empowerment and fun in one take? Swedish electro-pop duo Icona Pop is it. Formed in 2010 by Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt, Icona Pop has already caught international attention, playing at Decibel Festival, Culture Collide festival, Fashions Night Out, and now CMJ Music Marathon.

The single “I Love It” has got to be one of the world’s catchiest tunes. When it ends, you are left dumbfounded, wondering how many times is appropriate to hit “repeat.” To be fair, their song “Manners” also has that infectious dance flair, and was enough of a hit to be picked up by American indie duo Chiddy Bang for their song “Mind Your Manners.”

The problem with Icona Pop is that their music is so remarkably catchy, it’s hard to tell whether it is made for the big leagues, or whether they fit a need in the indie/dance genre for the moment. While I fancy songs such as “I Love It” and “Manners,” I’m not quite convinced that they are to CMJ what Zola Jesus, MIA, or MGMT were in the past.

With only a few songs to go off of, it is difficult to predict the grandiose success that CMJ may bring to these Swedish ladies, who are set to release their debut LP in 2013, with “I Love It,” as a pre-release of the album. Their second EP, Iconic, will be digitally released on October 16 before their official showcase at CMJ.

The music of Icona Pop is beautifully compiled. The lyrics are something Santigold could’ve written herself, with a playground-pop feel. My hope is that we will be hearing more of them in the future—depending on the versatility of tracks they provide in their upcoming album, as well as their growing international appeal. As far as I’m concerned, these ladies have it. | Kristyn Potter
