Like the title of their song “Pepper and Salt,” the latest from the Pennsylvania Americana band Frog Holler is a study in contrasts. Moving from indie-rock to the edge of bluegrass, the music never loses its rock feel, yet the country-bluegrass instrumentation (banjo, lap steel, and mandolin) never falls into the background. If you only hear the pretty melodies, you’ll never guess the lyrics are full of conflict and turmoil. The upshot is an example of why opposites attracting is a good thing.
