It’s been 17 years since the classic line-up of legendary rock band Van Halen played on a stage together. Now, the classic rock band brings its patented brand of rock ’n’ roll to the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in St. Louis. David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, and Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie’s son, will once again rock the stage with classic songs including “Jump,” “Panama,” “Runnin’ with the Devil,” and many more. (Original bassist Michael Anthony was not asked to reunite with the group.)

But will the wait have been worth it? Given their ages (60-plus) and physical conditions, not to mention egos, one may not expect much; from recent footage of the band live, however, it seems we may be in for a surprise.

Roth seems to be in a good space, at least vocally. While never the strongest of live vocalists, Roth seems to have once again found his pipes. As for the material they will be playing, the set list will, of course focus on the Roth years, and will likely not include any tracks from the Van Hagar era.

So, while hits like “Why Can’t This Be Love” and the like will not be heard, the material from the original lineup is enough to make for a great show. Eddie Van Halen’s epic guitar playing is always the star of the show, and guitarists everywhere long to hear his phenomenal solo piece “Eruption” in a live setting.

Where might this tour lead? Perhaps to a new studio album is in the future, and then maybe another tour. Or will the band go out on the highest note possible, and hang up their gear for the last time? Either way, this show is not to be missed. For rock fans everywhere, a Van Halen show is a special event. | Marc Farr

Van Halen plays the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in St. Louis on Sunday, July 26. Tickets are available on the LiveNation website, at the box office, through, and at all TicketMaster locations.
