The Damned | 40 Years of Damnation

Their name still shines bright in the punk scene, alongside The Clash and The Sex Pistols.

After 40 years, the Fathers of U.K. Punk are back to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Formed in London in 1976, The Damned achieved many a first in the punk rock scene—and are still here to enjoy their success. They are the first ever band of their genre to release a full-length LP (Dammed, Damned, Damned), as well as the first to release a single (“New Rose”) and tour the U.S. They have racked up nine singles on the U.K. Top 40 Chart.

And while there have been many different incarnations of the band, core members Dave Vanian (lead vocals) and Captain Sensible (guitar) remain in the fold. Joined by keyboardist Monty Oxymoron, drummer Pinch, and bassist Stu West, this has been the lineup since 2004.

The band is also well known for being one of the first Gothic-style punk bands on the scene. They helped form the gothic scene, with Vanian’s dark, gothic lyrical style. Yet, their name still shines bright in the punk scene, alongside The Clash and The Sex Pistols, for whom the band opened on their first U.K. and U.S. tours. Former Damned members include Chrissy Hynde of The Pretenders, as well as Lemmy Kilmister of Hawkwind and Motörhead.

Over the years, their overall style changed as they introduced more brooding, melodic songs. Vanian’s voice went from a raw baritone to a more smooth style. While they still loved to play fast, they proved themselves musically with a combination of punk and gothic styles. Their fan base has grown steadily, and now they are regarded as one of the finest gothic bands in punk history. | Marc Farr
