On Tour: The Mavericks

“Raul Malo is the Cuban Elvis! How do you not know him?”

I first heard the Mavericks a decade ago. My friend, Bridget, was a huge fan and made me go with her. I hadn’t heard the band before, and she was crazy in love with them. She kept saying, “Raul Malo is the Cuban Elvis! How do you not know him?” We arrived at the venue and it was filled with women—I mean filled. They knew all of the words to the songs. They knew every song. It was amazing. There were guys there, too, but still.

The music is wonderful. The lead singer, Raul Malo, has a beautiful voice, and his band (regardless of who is in it) is always tight. Their new album, Brand New Day, is wonderfully made. The music is thick with romance and the band creates a full feeling, making room for Malo’s amazing voice. Think of Roy Orbison. Or, you know, Bridget might have had a point: He might be the Cuban Elvis after all. | Melissa Cynova
