On Tour: The Flaming Lips

The lights and music and sheer spectacle of the show were transformative.

The first time I saw the Flaming Lips in concert, I felt like I was high. The lights and music and sheer spectacle of the show were transformative. I remember feeling my heart beating behind my eyes, watching Wayne Coyne walk across the crowd in a gigantic, inflated hamster ball and realizing that I was in the middle of something magical.

I remember seeing the faces around me when Coyne sang, “Do you realize/ That you have the most beautiful face?” People were crying and grinning and hugging like long-lost friends. I hugged a stranger, and I don’t condone that silliness in my day to day. It was, however, one of the most beautiful concerts I’ve ever attended.

They’re coming back, you guys. To the Pageant. We get to get fake-high (or real-high. You know, whatever. I’m not your mom) and hug strangers again. It’s going to be beautiful. Come with me. | Melissa Cynova
