On Tour: The Black Lillies

With a new album and new members, they have rocked and rolled on, soldiering forth to properly promote the new disc.

Country/Americana band the Black Lillies will be on the road, touring behind its newest release, Hard to Please. The album, their fourth, placed at number 12 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart, and number 30 on the Hot 100 in Country. Pretty impressive—just like the band itself.

Despite having recently been the victims of theft (their gear—everything was taken!) and losing some members of the band, nothing has stopped the core of this group from picking themselves up, dusting themselves off, and getting on with it. With a new album and new members, in addition to working with an outside producer for the first time, they have rocked and rolled on, soldiering forth to properly promote the new disc.

Having faced such odds, most acts would not continue on. Yet the Black Lillies stay true to their American work ethic, and it shows in their sound. The new album is fresh, and should play quite well live. Founding member and guitarist Cruz Contreras is unstoppable, with his devoted musicians: Tom Pryor on guitar and steel pedal, Bowman Townsend on percussion, Robert Richards on bass, and Trisha Gene Brady on vocals. Even with the theft of all their gear—right down to the band’s t-shirts and merchandise—they did not contemplate quitting. That, my friends, is dedication. | Marc Farr
