On Tour: Styx

One thing is certain: After over 30 years in the music industry, Styx can still rock the Paradise.

The 1970s hit-making machine known as Styx will be gracing stages across the nation in the coming weeks and months. When Dennis DeYoung departed in 1985, it looked like Styx might never again enjoy another hit—or even take the stage. Shaw also left, to co-create Damn Yankees with Jack Blades of Night Ranger. It seemed, perhaps, Styx was done, another band to fall apart after tremendous success. Yet after they reformed in 1995 (sans DeYoung), the band went on to rock the world—again.

The Tommy Shaw–led ensemble is known for many a hit, including “Lady,” “Too Much Time on My Hands,” and “Renegade,” which are still in regular radio rotation at rock stations nationwide. Despite the band’s many breakups and incarnations, when Shaw returned to the group, out on the road they went. With five consecutive albums certified multi-platinum and 16 Top 40 singles spanning over three decades, Styx is one of few artists to achieve such heights.

And on the road they go again! Drawing from albums such as Pieces of Eight, their über smash Paradise Theatre—which included three chart-topping singles—and Cornerstone, the theatrical live experience of this band is explosive. Fans might even get to hear classic tunes like “The Grand Illusion” or “Crystal Ball.”

As for DeYoung, he says he welcomes the idea of a reunion; how that will play out, though, remains to be seen. One thing is certain: After over 30 years in the music industry, Styx can still rock the Paradise. | Marc Farr
