On Tour: Slothrust

The best explanation about who they are and what they play is that they’re everything all at once.

A few months back, I had the opportunity to check out the Highly Suspect show at the very new Delmar Hall. Though the headlining act wasn’t precisely my cup of tea—which is presently Japanese green tea—the opening act, Slothrust, gave me a lot to think about over the following few weeks.

It wasn’t long before Slothrusts’s third album, Everyone Else, was sitting in my vinyl collection next to atmospheric death metal and old-school blues. To this day, it still escapes me as to how to describe the music they make. Like Albus Dumbledore said, “It’s maddening, because I’ve yet to even get close.”

The best explanation about who they are and what they play is that they’re everything all at once. So, they would fall under the dreaded umbrella of “modern” rock, even though we’ve been using that to describe bands from Nirvana to the Beastie Boys to Highly Suspect to whatever else that has nothing to do with anything.

On March 11, they will be playing a more intimate show at the Duck Room underneath Blueberry Hill on St. Louis’s Delmar Loop. As luck would have it, this is on a Friday night. This helps out old folks like me who have to get up to work the next morning.

Slothrust is one of those few bands that really do defy categorization—and they put on a show. There’s little else anyone could ask for. | Nik Cameron
