I am excited to see another release and tour from my old friends.
I hadn’t heard of Devon Allman before I saw he was coming to town. It’s a shame, really. I put his music on and it felt like coming home. I know that sounds like a cliché, but there is music that touches you and feels familiar from the first listen. I’m not terribly familiar with the Allman Brothers, except to know that they sang “Melissa,” after which I was probably named. They, too, have that comfortable, “at home” feeling.
I’ve seen lots of performers who are the sons or daughters of Name the Giant Star. I can’t imagine it’s an easy role to fill, but it seems that Devon Allman manages to avoid the usual angst that seems to follow second-gen artists around. He had a lovely sound and a lot to say.
Speaking of a lot to say, Rusted Root is back with their new album The Movement. I am excited to see another release and tour from my old friends. (This friendship, by the way, only exists in my head.) They’ve been with me through so many ups and downs in my life that I feel like I know them.
I feel that there are a few bands whose purpose is to share joy: Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, The Flaming Lips, and Rusted Root are three of these. I dare you to go to their concert and not grin until your face hurts.
I’ll be one of the people grinning like an idiot and bouncing up and down. | Melissa Cynova
