On Tour: Joywave

You’ll find a way, physics be damned, to physically kick yourself in the head if you miss one of the best concerts of the year.

The great thing about a Metric show is you’re pretty much guaranteed the opening act will be stellar, and one you’ll absolutely want to arrive early for. No time has that been more apparent than the addition of Joywave as openers on the band’s Pagans in Vegas tour, which touches down at The Pageant in St. Louis on Friday, March 4.

Joywave is currently on the road promoting its latest album, and first full-length effort, the critically acclaimed How Do You Feel Now? (Hollywood Records), released in April of last year. Though I have no professional experience as a soothsayer, I can promise you’ll find a way, physics be damned, to physically kick yourself in the head if you miss out on what will be one of the best concerts of the year.

Built on a solid foundation of sharp songwriting courtesy of head Joywaver Daniel Armbruster, the Rochester, New York, quintet’s electro-pop gems shine even brighter in a live setting, as witnessed by the band’s appearances at Lollapalooza, and on TV’s Jimmy Kimmel Live and Late Night with Seth Myers.

Want to prepare for the fun you’ll have? Get thee to YouTube and check out their delightfully absurdist music videos—after you pick yourself up off the floor in shock that people still make delightfully absurdist music videos. The magnificent clip for the catchy “Somebody New” is a delirious fever dream of digitally enabled pratfalls, as if Looney Tunes maestro Chuck Jones directed David Byrne enduring a skater-boy acid-trip. | Jim Ousley
