Matt Costa | 04.23.13

mattcosta 75This is no throwback; it’s a step forward for Costa and, I think as a whole, it’s his strongest work yet.

Matt Costa’s self-titled release, the fourth in his catalog, is a shape-shifting, soaring bit of orchestral loveliness. His blend of pop/folk has always been highly influenced by Great Britain greats like The Beatles and Donovan. On this album, his style has reached across the blue Atlantic to shake hands with the North American continent and the likes of Jim Croce, Bob Dylan, and Gordon Lightfoot. The 1970s are strong with this one, and that is just fine by me. This is no throwback; it’s a step forward for Costa and, I think as a whole, it’s his strongest work yet.

The album is available on Soundcloud for your perusal. I highly recommend you check out the tracks “Silver Seas” (my personal favorite), “Clipped Wings,” and “Walls Like Windows” to get a good feel for what this album is all about. Even better, come to Firebird next Wednesday night and experience it firsthand. | Janet Rhoads

Matt Costa performs at Firebird April 24 with openers The Blank Tapes. Doors at 7:30 p.m., show 8:30, all ages, $15.
