The Pageant, St. Louis

Sweden’s latest export in the world of hard rock will soon grace the stage of The Pageant as Ghost, led by third lead singer Papa Emeritus III, brings its satanic brand of heavy metal to St. Louis. Promoting its third full-length album, Meliorate, the band has been playing to sellout crowds, as word about the uber-talented act has spread quickly.

Whether or not their satanic front is real or simply image fodder has yet to be truly determined. While some listeners may be turned off by the dooming lyrics, there is no denying the musical talent of this band. As its stars rise higher in the sky of rock, this may be the last time to see Ghost in such an intimate setting. Yet, when I took a peek at their set list, their most popular single, “Secular Haze,” is not being played this time around.

Wearing theatrical masks, the musicians in the band are known only as “Nameless Ghouls,” while the star of the show is the ever-evolving role of Papa Emeritus. Clad in skull-like face paint and a replica of the Pope’s attire, Papa delivers a cross of aggressive growls with a beautiful tenor voice. Almost progressive in delivery, the band is on point and tight when playing live: a ritual, as it is known to fans. | Marc Farr
