Marvel Comics 12.05.07 | Two big crossovers, and two big artists return

whatifxmse.jpgCould this be Marvel’s biggest week of 2007? Quite possibly! Crossover-wise, the survivors survey the damage in World War Hulk: Aftersmash, while out in space Quasar and Adam Warlock take on Ultron in Annihilation: Conquest #2. Meanwhile, manga-star master Joe Madureira finally gets back behind the drawing board for the release of Ultimates 3 #1 and, in even bigger news, classic X-Factor artist Larry Stroman returns to comics for the first time in more than a decade to take on What If? X-Men: The Rise & Fall of the Shi’Ar Empire.

Witness The Aftersmash of World War Hulk!

World War Hulk is over-but the Aftersmash has only just begun! In World War Hulk: Aftersmash, the surviving heroes must find a way to rebuild the war torn isle of Manhattan while a new hero seeks to follow the Hulk’s path…with a goliath impact! World War Hulk architect and acclaimed author Greg Pak teams with artist Rafa Sandoval for this special one-shot that lays the foundation for the future of Hulk’s world and the new directions for many of the WWH survivors. The Warbound, the Renegades, Heroes for Hire, Iron Man, Tom Foster, and Damage Control all seek to change course in their lives, but just how are their fates intertwined? This extra-sized issue also includes bonus material not found anywhere else!

As characters head in startling new directions, the effects of this one-shot will ripple throughout the Marvel Universe and into two all new series-World War Hulk Aftersmash: Warbound and World War Hulk Aftersmash: Damage Control. Just how do the survivors move on after World War Hulk? And is the war truly over?

The incredible answers smash on through to the other side this December in World War Hulk: Aftersmash!

Ultron Stands Revealed In Annihilation: Conquest #2!

In Annihilation: Conquest #1, not only did the fan-favorite cosmic hero Adam Warlock return, but the true villain behind the invasion of the Kree Empire was revealed… the Avengers’ infamous robotic arch-nemesis, Ultron! Marvel’s epic sci-fi series continues in Annihilation: Conquest #2 (of 6) as the acclaimed creative team of writers Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning and penciler Tom Raney continue to deliver shocking twists and amazing visuals!  Can the desperate team of Quasar, Moondragon, and the newly revived Adam Warlock unlock the secrets of the High Evolutionary? Did Ronan’s motley crew survive their fiery fate in issue #1? And, hey…issue #2 brings Star-Lord and his crazy squad into the action!

Critics and fans alike continue to rave about the cosmic event. "What stands out most about the story put forth in this title is the writing," Nick Budd of Comicpants.com stated. "[All the Conquest tie-ins] have all had some of the best writing that I’ve seen lately in comics. That seems like a bold statement, and it is, but it’s the god’s honest truth… Annihilation: Conquest surprises the heck out of you with great reveals and superb action."

Brian Warmoth of Wizarduniverse.com com agrees: "{Annihilation: Conquest is} a can’t-miss…the cosmic big guns are all getting cocked right now…the action and artwork are great, and there’s always a payoff. I have yet to be let down with an Annihilation title, and this one doesn’t look to be jostling the bar anytime soon."

Jesse Schedeen of IGN.com raves: "Writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning managed to weave a story that‘s accessible to new readers without alienating the fans who have been following this story since August…Much like with the original Annihilation, the toll of the war is felt in every panel. Despite the fact that we’re reading about godlike characters who kick around asteroids like soccer balls, the battles play out in a very brutal and guerrilla-like fashion."

Big Tom Casual of NewSeedComics.blogspot.com weighs in with: "Annihilation: Conquest is another fully realized, beautifully produced space opera that is showing all the signs of being just as good as the original."

So if you were shocked by issue one, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! More action, answers and even more mysteries arrive in Annihilation: Conquest #2!

Loeb, Madureira & Lichtner Unleash Ultimates 3 #1!

The most-star studded comic book of the event arrives this December and when it’s done, the Ultimate Universe will never be the same! Ultimates 3 #1 (of 5), from Eisner-winning and Emmy-nominated writer Jeph Loeb (Fallen Son, Heroes) joins the superstar art team of Joe Madureira & Christian Lichtner (Uncanny X-Men, Battle Chasers) to bring you the can’t-miss third season of the world’s most controversial super hero team! No longer working for S.H.I.E.L.D., Earth’s mightiest heroes operate from Tony Stark’s mansion in New York -but that doesn’t mean they’re in the clear! New members! New adventures! New secrets! The March on Ultimatum continues here and when one of Earth’s greatest heroes dies, it sends the Ultimate Universe down the path of no return!

"Is Christmas here already?  Jeez, it seems like it gets here earlier every year!" smiled Loeb. "I’m thrilled that retailers, fans, and new readers will finally get a chance to see the amazing artwork that Joe Mad and Chris Lichtner and Richard Starkings have created for this project. We realize that we’re following a creative team that is unfollowable (is that a word?), but I think Mark Millar put it best when he said, upon seeing some of the artwork, that we were like the new James Bond.  Different cast, different look, but it’s still a James Bond movie.  Hopefully, he meant Daniel Craig and not Timothy Dalton!

Everyone on the team and at Marvel have put all their best efforts into making this THE book for the year end.  Enjoy!"

Who are the Ultimates now? What’s happened since the conclusion of the second volume? And just what could possibly tear this team apart? The answers arrive in Ultimates 3 #1, along with your choice of two stunning gatefold covers-one featuring the heroes and another featuring the villains!

What If Vulcan Gained the Power of the Phoenix?

As the events of X-Men: Messiah CompleX rages on, fans will discover quite a different reality as Vulcan gains omnipotent power and defeats the X-Men in What If? X-Men: The Rise & Fall Of The Shi’Ar Empire. Fan favorite scribe Christopher Yost (New X-Men, X-Men: Emperor Vulcan) and legendary X-artist Larry Stroman team together for the most un-x-pected tale of the year, wrapped up in a stunning cover by Olivier Coipel!

"Once Chris Yost, who was already working on Emperor Vulcan and steeped in all things Rise & Fall, came on board as the writer everything started falling into place rather quickly," says Justin F. Gabrie, Editor of the book and Managing Editor of Marvel Publishing.  "His whole take was that Vulcan represents the rebellious teen who never felt understood, cared for, much less appreciated and strikes back at the world for it… except played out at a galactic level, of course. This quickly grows to a universal threat when during the course of the story, Vulcan acquires the power of the Phoenix Force. With a person of infinite power who came from such a dysfunctional childhood, what would their ultimate wish be?"

"The best thing to come out of this is the return of Larry Stroman… not only to all things X, not only to Marvel Publishing, but to comics in general," says Gabrie.  "Every page that came in from Larry brought out the fan boys in us as shades of his legendary run on X-Factor with Peter David was evident with each line stroke. The rest of the team is rounded out by the slick inks of Jon Sibal and by the colorful hues of Christina Strain who also graces the cover art by Oliver Coipel. So come pick up this issue and join us in welcoming Stroman back."

X-Men: The Rise & Fall Of The Shi’Ar Empire was a wild, cosmic rollercoaster ride in the fashion that only the X-Men can provide, so be sure to check out What If? X-Men: The Rise & Fall Of The Shi’Ar Empire as this one-shot shows what would happen if that crazy ride went straight off the tracks and Vulcan gained the power of the Phoenix!

Marvel urgers retailers to check their orders on What If? X-Men: The Rise & Fall Of The Shi’Ar Empire as the first What If? issue of 2007, What If? Planet Hulk, had quickly sold out at Diamond.
