Marvel Comics 08.07 | Halo and more

haloThe entire comics industry may be in San Diego for Comic-Con International, but your friends at the Mighty Marvel didn't forget about those of you who stayed home this weekend! We start things off with a preview of the video game adaptation Halo: Uprising #1, then follow it up with Illyana's revenge in New X-Men #41, Namor vs. Wolverine in Sub-Mariner #3, and World War Hulk smashing through World War Hulk: X-Men #2 and Ghost Rider #14.

The Master Chief Wages War in Halo: Uprising #1

The Eisner Award-winning team of writer Brian Bendis, artist Alex Maleev and colorist Matt Hollingsworth are back to bring you one of the most anticipated new series of the year-Halo: Uprising! Based on the hit video game series, but perfect for fans both new and old, Halo: Uprising #1 begins the tale of the heroic Master Chief's struggle to reach Earth before the evil Covenant's engines of war get there first! Set in the time period between Halo 2 and Halo 3, Halo: Uprising answers all those questions that fans have been asking for years, and introduces new characters into the Halo mythos! And now fans can get their first look at the stunning interior art of Maleev, along with the first three covers to this can't-miss limited series!

"It was an honor to be asked to add something to the Halo pot," said writer Brian Michael Bendis. "To bring to Halo what the graphic novel brought, some humanity and perspective-something you can't get in the game based solely on the nature of the different mediums. Alex and I also have tried to create a juicy sci-fi story that even if you don't play or know anything about Halo, you could buy this and enjoy it just on its own character and storytelling momentum. But if you are a Halo die-hard you will find connections, characters, and references to not only the three Halo games, but the novels as well."

Fans have fallen in love with Halo's mix of intricate storytelling, stunning visuals and intense action, all of which Bendis & Maleev bring to Halo: Uprising #1. If you're looking to quench your thirst for authentic Halo action and thrills, then don't miss this bold new limited series!

Illyana's Vengeance In New X-Men!

After years of suffering at the dark hands of the demon Belasco, will Illyana Rasputin finally have her revenge on the devil who stole her innocent soul?  In New X-Men #41, three brave squads of Xavier's mutants prepare for the final battle against the devil himself, but the stakes are high – if these Children of the Atom lose the fight then Belasco will pull the entire world into Limbo to find Illyana!  The stunning conclusion of the "Quest for Magik" is written by the acclaimed duo of Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle, with pencils and cover by the red-hot Skottie Young.

The pace was fast and furious in the sold-out New X-Men #40 (though copies may be available at the retail level); Rockslide evolved into a hulking, lava infused creature, Pixie now wields the power of black magic, X-23 was brought back to life and summarily killed again, and the cavalry finally arrived in Limbo only to be met by a hungry horde of devilish familiars!  Now, the stage is set for the final act, but Belasco might lose the upper hand when the Astonishing X-Men show up with the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange!

Also, New X-Men #41 includes the eighth chapter of Endangered Species written by Christos Gage and penciled by Scot Eaton.  Beast crosses a line when he digs up remains on Genosha in the name of science – will this X-Man go to any lengths to save mutantkind? And just who will join him in this quest? Prepare to be shocked!

True Believers, if the gripping New X-Men #41 doesn't leave you saying, "By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth," then we haven't done our job!

The Atlantean King Versus the Canadian Canucklehead!

900 Americans are dead and S.H.I.E.L.D. is pointing the finger at Namor!  In Sub-Mariner #3, Namor races against time to find the location of the rogue sleeper cell agents before they commit more heinous crimes in the name of Atlantis. But is he ready to battle Wolverine? Writers Matt Cherniss and Peter Johnson (Powerless) and up-and-coming artist Phil Briones (White Tiger) are making waves with the new limited series about Marvel's first mutant and his constant struggle against the "weaklings" of the surface world.  Also, this action-packed issue features magnificent cover art by Young Guns Reloaded star Leinil Francis Yu (New Avengers).

After plowing through Iron Man and his armada of S.H.I.E.L.D. submarines, Namor searches for his old ally, Charles Xavier, only to find the Canadian berserker ready and waiting for a scrap at the gates of the X-Mansion!  Meanwhile, sinister figures are lurking in the shadows; the rogue Atlanteans make plans to murder their "traitor king," but the vicious Venom might beat them to the punch if he develops a taste for seafood!

The conflict heats up in Sub-Mariner #3; will all of this tension lead to an inevitable war between Atlantis and America …and more importantly, will that war result in Namor's death?  One thing is certain, the monarch of the seas won't go down without a fight – Imperius Rex!
