Streetside Records on Delmar closes 12.24.07

streetside.gifThe flagship location for the venerable St. Louis-based record store chain shutters its doors for good on Christmas Eve, and we want to hear what you have to say about it.

The battles have been fought and lost, and now the final nail is being driven into the coffin of a St. Louis landmark: the Streetside Records on Delmar Blvd. in the University City Loop is shutting its doors for good after Christmas Eve.

While its true that Streetside Records was never the same after it left local ownership in the early part of the new millennium (first to New Jersey-based CD World, and later to corporate behemoth Trans World Entertainment), that doesn’t negate the fact that for years, Streetside was THE place for music in St. Louis. Streetside stores sprouted up throughout St. Louis County before spreading into Illinois, Columbia, Kansas City, and farther flung territories. As music retail in general took a downturn, the company took a hit and stores closed, but the flagship location at 6314 Delmar continued to thrive.

But now, 36 years after first opening its doors just across the street from its current location, the Delmar Streetside will be no more. In honor of the closing of a St. Louis institution, we want to hear your favorite stories from throughout the history of the dearly departed record store chain. Whether you’re a former employee with a war story worth sharing, someone with a warm remembrance of buying your first record or CD at a Streetside location, or you just want to pontificate on the horrors of Miles Davis’ star on the St. Louis walk of fame being in front of a Mexican restaurant, pass along your thoughts to Jason Green at jason [at] playbackstl [dot] com by December 22nd. Be sure to include your name, city of residence, and, if you ever worked at a Streetside location, which location and when you worked there. We’ll post as many stories as we can charge through during the busy holiday season.

Thanks, and I look forward to reading your stories!
