(ST. LOUIS): Follow the herd to the Shaw Nature Reserve for Prairie Day, Saturday, Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet early prairie settlers and explore what life was like on the great American frontier during the bi-annual family event.
The Reserve’s 250-acre re-created tall grass prairie provides an authentic backdrop for the day’s festivities. Take a guided hike with a naturalist to learn about the land and chat with living history characters about their lives on the prairie. Watch as a weaver, spinner, blacksmith, candle maker, natural dye maker and others demonstrate their trades. Visit with an archaeologist and a flint-knapper to examine the primitive stone tools and other artifacts used by early settlers. Explore inside the homes of prairie dwellers, including a little house made of sod and a tall teepee.
Mingle with “Boomer the Prairie Chicken” and join in a variety of old-fashioned pioneer games. Children can climb atop small horses for rides, or check out the mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects on display to discover their roles in prairie life.
Listen to toe-thumping tunes from a live band and enjoy bison burgers, homemade baked goods and kettle corn available for purchase. A variety of prairie wildflowers, grasses and seeds will also be available for purchase from local native plant nurseries.
Prairie Day is sponsored by the Shaw Nature Reserve and Missouri Department of Conservation.
Admission is $3 for adults and free for children ages 12 and under. Missouri Botanical Garden members and Shaw Nature Reserve passholders are also free.
The Shaw Nature Reserve is located on the south side of Interstate 44 at exit #253 in Gray Summit, Mo. (less than 10 miles past the Six Flags exit).
