Chris Lawing, Film Director and President of Mercury Multimedia, Inc., a local film and video production company, walked away with Most Creative Film Award and Best Visual Effects Award at the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase. More than 70 films made by filmmakers of all ages participated in this year’s filmmakers showcase. Lawing took the honors for directing a music video titled Movie of Your Life, the silver screen debut for music artist Spencer Day.

Movie of Your Life takes viewers on a musical journey with Day starring as the pianist at an old movie theater who sings his heart out to a moviegoer who catches his eye.  Together, the romantic duo play out scenes of some of the most beloved films of all time, including Citizen Kane, Casablanca and Singin’ in the Rain. Laden with visual effects and an impressive homage to classic films, Movie of Your Life makes a splash as both a music video and a pure visual treat.

“Creating the perfect movie going experience is something every director strives for, and winning the most creative film award is a major validation of that experience,” said Chris Lawing, Film Director for Movie of Your Life and President of Mercury Multimedia.

The Eighth Annual St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase (SLFS), presented by nonprofit Cinema St. Louis, screened works that were written, directed, edited or produced by St. Louis natives or those with strong local ties. The St. Louis Films Critics, an association of professional critics in the metropolitan area, select the award winners each year and this year chose Movie of Your Life as Most Creative Film and Best Visual Effects.

“The staff of Cinema St. Louis was simply blown away by the overall quality of the films presented in this year’s Showcase,” said Chris Clark, Artistic Director, Cinema St. Louis.  “Clearly the local filmmaking community is taking the art of the cinema very seriously as evidenced by the exquisite craftsmanship of their recent works. The luxurious look of films such as "Movie of Your Life" and the feature Streetballers represent a triumphant new era in St. Louis filmmaking.”

Lawing came across the project through Mercury’s cinematographer Sean Mitchell, the music video’s producer and visual effects supervisor. Lawing and Mitchell worked together from concept to the final award-winning piece, focusing primarily on the challenge of recreating some of the most classic Hollywood scenes of all time.  Lawing also enjoyed the challenge of directing talent and supervising the production crew of 30 people and over 25 visual effects artists to ensure the concept came to life as envisioned.  Lawing says the entire production and post-production team helped earn these awards, especially Mitchell, whose special effects credits include Evolution and Cats and Dogs.

A filmmaker with over fourteen years of film and broadcast directing and editing experience,  Lawing’s film and television credits include: editor of Showtime’s BBGun, the independent feature Uncommon Friends, and emily’s ghost, a film Lawing wrote, directed and edited. He also served as an assistant editor on Pixar’s Monsters Inc. and Showtime’s The Settlement.

Lawing’s local production company Mercury Multimedia has directed and produced national and local commercials, marketing videos, music videos, television episodes and other original film and video content for more than a decade. Mercury has received numerous recognitions for their work, including five awards in the past few months, from a Telly award for the company’s own demo reel to Hermes, Summit International, Aegis and Videographer Awards. Mitchell has worked as Lawing’s lead cinematographer for nearly a decade. Movie of Your Life has earned its own collection of awards, including a Telly Award and two DV Awards.

The winning piece now goes onto the St. Louis International Film Festival that will run November 13-23, 2008.
