Ink and Drink Comics Releases SPIRITS OF ST. LOUIS

The graphic novel of “13 terrifying tales" from St. Louis-based creators arrives October 13th with a signing at Star Clipper in the U. City Loop.

We here at PLAYBACK:stl love St. Louis and, in case the thousand-plus comic book reviews, previews, and interviews we’ve posted over the years didn’t make it clear, we love our comic books, too. So it’s only natural that those two interests would collide, and they have in the form of the horror comics anthology Spirits of St. Louis.

Spirits of St. Louis is the inaugural release from Ink and Drink Comics, so named for the monthly “ink and drink” sessions where the book was conceived. The 80-page graphic novel features 13 stories from 22 writers and artists that run “a wide gamut of styles from supernatural disquiet to brutal gore to black-as-night comedy.” The credits list is a veritable who’s who of current and former PLAYBACKers: the book is edited by Comics Editor Jason Green and former Contributing Editor Bryan A. Hollerbach, and features stories by comics reviewers Justin Crouse, Steve Higgins, Nick Main, and Stephanie Richardson as well as two creators who visitors to the Graphic Ink section will know all too well, Carlos Gabriel Ruiz (whose comics Pretentious Record Store Guy and Elliott Goes date back to PLAYBACK:stl’s print days) and Kevin Wolf (whose strip Pangaea was named the “Best Local Comic Book” by the Riverfront Times in 2008).
After selling out of an initial print run at Project Comic Con in Maryland Heights in late September, Spirits of St. Louis celebrates its official release on October 13th at Star Clipper in the U. City Loop with a signing featuring 14 of the book’s 22 creators. See below for more information on signings as well as the official press release. Ink and Drink Comics Releases SPIRITS OF ST. LOUIS
A collection of 13 terrifying tales from the Gateway City
St. Louis, MO (September 22, 2010) — Ink and Drink Comics is proud to welcome all of you eerie dearies to SPIRITS OF ST. LOUIS, the inaugural release from the St. Louis-based publisher.
SPIRITS OF ST. LOUIS is an 80-page, square-bound graphic novel featuring 13 terrifying tales, the work of 22 St. Louisans, former St. Louisans, and a few friends from around the nation. Growing out of a series of regular monthly “ink and drink” sessions where members of the St. Louis comics community gather to share adult beverages, discuss comics, and show off works-in-progress, the anthology serves as a showcase for the unsung creative talents of the Gateway City. The stories therein cover a wide gamut of styles from supernatural disquiet to brutal gore to black-as-night comedy, taking inspiration from St. Louis’ own rich horror history (the ghost-filled Lemp Mansion, the incident that inspired The Exorcist), classic folk tales, the works of Edgar Allan Poe and George A. Romero, and more.
The book is edited by Bryan A. Hollerbach (former editor for several locally based publications, including St. Louis Magazine and PLAYBACK:stl) and Jason Green (Comics Editor for PLAYBACK:stl), with art direction by Carlos Gabriel Ruiz (creator of Pretentious Record Store Guy and a Zuda Comics finalist for his strip Development Hell), and features two covers: one by fine art painter Adam Davenport, and the other by Kyle Morton (artist of Husk: The Hollow Planet, a graphic novel written by Kids in the Hall’s Scott Thompson to be released by IDW Publishing in November 2010). Brief biographies of the entire creative team can be found at
After a sellout debut at Project Comic Con 2, SPIRITS OF ST. LOUIS will see a wide release on October 13th, with a signing event at Star Clipper (6392 Delmar Blvd, University City, MO) featuring most of the book’s contributors. The book will be available at finer comic shops (interested stores should contact for more information) and at Retail price is $9.99.
