Monopoli | Serious About Kicking Ass

Written by Leslie Wilson Tuesday, 13 February 2007 03:58

prof_monopoli_sm"This is a pretty politically minded city," says Rube, "and because we live in it, we're pretty politically minded. We do feel that there is a certain aspect of responsibility when you have the mic."

Guster | Throwing Out All the Rules

Written by Jason Green Monday, 12 February 2007 03:03

gusterheader"It was...pretty much the band throwing out all the rules that we'd been using to develop an identity over the course of a career, which is something you need to do every now and then."

Dirty Pretty Things | Lose the Tie

Written by Laura Hamlett Thursday, 01 February 2007 13:38

prof_dpt_sm Glasgow in January, there's really not much to do but drink, fight, fuck, and record a record.

Nite Owl | Return of the Real Emcee

Written by Toriano L. Porter Monday, 29 January 2007 16:00

prof_nite_sm"When people leave tonight, I want them to be able to say they had a good time and enjoyed the show," Nite Owl says. "Especially my set."

Imogen Heap | Speaking for Herself

Written by Preston Jones Thursday, 14 December 2006 03:09

ev_imogen_sm"I don't like lyrics that tell an obvious tale; I like things that tug your imagination in different places and forces you to create your own meanings for it."

The Hold Steady | Born to Kick Your Ass

Written by Jeremy Goldmeier Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:00

holdsteadyFinn sets the energy level at every show, serving as the focal point for the band's maelstrom. In interviews, however, he and Kubler seem to trade personas. Finn comes across as laconic and easy-going, Kubler as giddy and talkative.

Steppin' Out With the Kooks

Written by Laura Hamlett Wednesday, 29 November 2006 03:25

prof_kooks_smIt's always about a feeling, isn't it? If you feel something is not right, you don't do it. And if something feels right and someone puts a great idea forward, then you embrace it and you try and make it your own; you develop it. With the music side of things, we all write songs anyways, so we all know how a song works, 'cause we all know how a good song sounds and ways to reach it up a bit.

Gentleman Auction House | On the Block

Written by Laura Hamlett Wednesday, 29 November 2006 02:54

prof_gah_sm"Personally, I think if you're a person that is driven to do something, it's often impossible to describe why. I just know that I wake up every day with my stomach nervous and my hands jittery. I can't turn off the drive to write songs and play music. Ridiculous as it may be, that's how it is."

Berry Get Therapy

Written by Brian McClelland Friday, 24 November 2006 16:00

prof_berry_sm"Marriage dealt with a crumbling relationship and all of the depression, resignation, and quiet hope that consumes you in that situation. Most of the writing on Empathy is coming out of [singer/guitarist Joey Lemon's] first year of a Masters in Counseling program."

The Decemberists | Setting the Stage

Written by Jeremy Goldmeier Saturday, 11 November 2006 08:55

decemberistssmallIf Colin Meloy serves as the director, playwright, and lead performer of the Portland, Ore.-based Decemberists' jolly troupe, then the crack team of instrumentalists that backs him up must be the criminally underappreciated group of techies.

Kaki King | Seeing Red

Wednesday, 08 November 2006 15:01

king"I don't have a very strong voice," she says. "I think limiting myself to what I'm capable of really was better than pushing myself to try and sing with a growl or with a lot of breath behind it. So I think that it ended up being far better to build upon what some people would consider a weakness and turn it into a strength."

Not Just Dessert | The Sweet Sounds of Cake on Cake

Written by Kevin Renick Monday, 06 November 2006 10:55

The surface sparkle of the music is always an invitation to go deeper, where melancholy thoughts and joyful reverie occur in equal measure.

Still Alive | Gravity Kills

Written by Jason Green Friday, 20 October 2006 07:45

Killoween II takes place on October 28 at Pop's 24/7 in scenic Sauget, Ill., and once again features Gravity Kills headlining a trio of local bands: One Lone Car, Ultra Blue, and longtime local favorites Fragile Porcelain Mice. The show is sponsored, appropriately enough, by the band's old friends at the Point.

Towers of London | Reality Bites

Written by Brian Kenney Wednesday, 11 October 2006 08:16

From court appearances, to being kicked off tours and out of clubs, they've got the attitude. And in an image vs. substance industry, it's all about looks, innit?

Jeremy Enigk | Patience Is a Virtue

Written by Brian Kenney Wednesday, 11 October 2006 08:11

"I'm a lot more comfortable in my skin than I was as a kid. I let go of a lot of the baggage and the demons that haunt me. So this album allows me to start fresh."

Scissor Sisters' New Bag of Tricks

Written by Cory Hoehn Wednesday, 11 October 2006 03:05

"[Sir Elton John] said in the beginning, ‘I don't know what's gonna happen. You guys do whatever you want with these songs. Let's just have fun. If nothing happens, we still enjoyed the process."
