Dark. Long-haired. Crashing guitars. Angry lyrics. These are the telltale signs of metal in the past, stereotypes that still ring true today. However, Bullet for My Valentine is not your dad's metal band. Hailing from Bridgend, Wales, this four-piece band has recently released its second album, Scream Aim Fire, and they are heading to the United States to be a part of Kevin Lyman's Taste of Chaos tour.

"We've been so fortunate," drummer Michael "Moose" Thomas said, in regard to Taste of Chaos. "We thought it would be a great chance for us to get back on tour in America. The record came out with perfect timing with that."

Scream Aim Fire hit #4 on the Billboard 200 Charts at its debut January 29, selling almost 53,000 copies in its first week. Scream Aim Fire follows up B4MV's The Poison, which was released in 2005. Since the band has spent so much time on tour over the past couple of years, most of the writing on the album was done while on tour.

"A song is mostly written from the back of a tour bus," Thomas said. "Matt and Padge would just play guitar at the back of the bus, if we liked something we'd hear, we'd record the guitar in or whatever it was, and we would just finish it off." After they write the musical components of it, front man and vocalist Matthew Tuck writes the lyrics.

Despite the overwhelming success of The Poison, the band was not overconfident going into this record and just went with a sound that they all agreed upon.

"We just write the songs that we're all happy within the band and then it went into recording them. Recording this record was much more pleasant than recording the last one," Thomas confesses.

They did try to limit some elements of it though, like the presence of a screamer.

"I'm not a really big fan of it... On this new record, we tried to take as much of that out as possible. There's a limit with what you can achieve with such a harsh scream sound, so we tried to take it out to make our songs more timeless and classic songs. For some music, it's really cool, though. It adds more aggression and a lot more edge," Thomas said.

The band plans on sticking to their classic metal sound though, at least for the next few albums.

"I think that's just the way we write songs really. I mean, we're heavy metal fans first and foremost. And the song, the heavier it is, that's the way we like it," Thomas said. "We're always going to evolve as a band anyway, so maybe album number three or album number four might be completely different from Scream Aim Fire."

B4MV's attempt to make classic metal songs, instead of following the current trends, may be what keeps its fans interested and diverse.

"We're pretty unique because we can cross over to a more mainstream audience and a metal audience as well. Some bands might not have the ability to do that, but we can," Thomas said.

For the most part, B4MV chalks up its success to plain and simple hard work.

"We worked hard. I mean, we've toured America about five times now and they've been long, long tours," Thomas said. "So, it's because of hard work, really. The radio's picked up both songs, which is cool. So, we'll never stop coming over to America until we feel we're big enough to stop touring and just work a couple of shows here and there."
