The Late Cord | Lights From the Wheelhouse EP (4ad/Beggars Group)

| Print |

A full album will tell if the Late Cord can rise above comparisons to bands that have already been there and done that.

The Late Cord's debut EP is equal parts back country and sound experiment. Composed of two native Texans, John-Mark Lapham (sound-noodler for the Earlies) and Micah P. Hinson (a 24-year-old with a solo debut under his belt), the Late Cord boasts a rooted identity that most bands aren't capable of producing in five songs. "My Most Meaningful Relationships Are With Dead People" is the focal point of the EP, where soft, lilting vocals drift over clunky piano chords amid an otherwise blurry—albeit pleasing—soundscape.

A full album will tell if the Late Cord can rise above comparisons to bands that have already been there and done that. In the meantime, Wheelhouse lets you drift in another artful, sleepy lullaby from 4AD.
