It's light and fluffy, like a desert that doesn't come in a wrapper.
The Submarines have constructed a gentle, dreamy collection of songs that float in my head like the lightest wind wisps my bangs. (If that first sentence was too cheesy for you, then you probably wouldn't like Declare a New State.)
The Submarines story is a happy one, albeit not without its trials and tribulations, all laid out to tender tunes written for each other. Blake (the lady) and John (the gentleman) found each other, separated, only to reunite and soundtrack the whole story. What a lovely idea!
The techno hint and airy male/female vocals resemble Jenny Lewis and Ben Gibbard in their duets with the Postal Service.
I don't mean to sound cynical (I'm aiming at sarcasm), and there is something of a uplifting feeling that transcends the thickly layered love, but it's sweet. It's light and fluffy, like a desert that doesn't come in a wrapper. Maybe even a homemade angel food cake with a fruity layer. If it was coffee, it'd be a light roast with cream and sugar.
