The latest from local indie-dirge outfit Dozemarypool follows a series of demos with seven tracks of guitar heroics and wailing vocals. Three Pieces wanders between atmosphere and thrash, the three members providing a formidable aural assault. More menacing than shoegaze, too subtle for metal, these songs border on some sort of blues-metal-shoegaze fusion. "Curious the Cat Killer" gatecrashes the party with its insistent guitars and propulsive Bonham-approved drums. Closer "Delay" flirts with psychedelia as the bass and drums lock in to a groove and guitarist Ryan Stoutenborough folds feedback in to dramatic effect. The album suffers a bit from a midrange-y glaze: the instruments all compete for the same frequencies, lending the songs a similarity they do not deserve in actuality. The fluid parts are lost into a drift. The makings of a great band are all present, as long as they can nail the delivery. A stellar first effort from a talented outfit. A- | James McAnally
