Radio censorship

Radio's not getting any better, so here's my suggestion...

 

Immediately ban the following acts from each and every station worldwide, and discourage any and all similar forays into mediocrity. It's about time we embraced creativity and talent over pablum.

  • Hootie & the Blowfish
  • Melissa Etheridge
  • Gin Blossoms
  • Sheryl Crow
  • Michael Bolton
  • Celine Dion
  • Barenaked Ladies
  • Any and all artists who got their start on American Idol

(I reserve the right to add to this list.)

Got anything you'd like to add? Please feel free in the comments below; I'm sure there are plenty of talentless hacks I missed.

Overplayed? Yes. Pablum? Hardly. There's a real sense of quiet desperation lurking in the lyrics of many Gin Blossoms songs, and that should be no surprise: Doug Hopkins, who wrote all of their biggest hits, was an alcoholic who suffered from severe depression, and when the rest of the group fired him, he killed himself. Nothing they did after they lost Hopkins hit the same level of quality (except for "Until I Hear It From You" from the Empire Records soundtrack), but their first album is a damn fine pop record.

Hootie, though? They deserve the ban, if for no other reason than their downright painful cover of R.E.M.'s "Driver 8."

Artists I would forever ban, if I controlled radio...
