It's hard to pick a Top 10, so the criteria I'm using include how impressed I was at the time I saw the play, and how much of it has stayed with me since. When I continue to think about a show long after I've seen it, then it continues to impress me. Note: I did not include musicals in this list, but I'd like to congratulate both Stages and New Line Theatre for their amazing productions in 2009, especially New Line's Love Kills, one of the best musical versions of a dramatic (and real-life) story I've ever seen.

So, from 10 down to one, the highlights of 2009 according to me are

10. Back of the Throat | Actor's Studio Theatre

9. The Dead Guy | HotCity Theatre

8. The Belle of Amherst | Insight Theatre

7. Doubt | Dramatic License Productions

6. Glengarry Glen Ross | HotCity Theatre

5. Secret Order | The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Studio

4. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? | Muddy Waters Theatre

3. The Sweetest Swing in Baseball | Non Prophet Theater Co.

2. Brooklyn Boy | New Jewish Theatre

1. 4.48 Psychosis | Slightly Askew Theatre Company
