Three years after the release of their self-titled debut album, Mute Math is aiming for perfection. The goal: learn from flaws on full-length album number one and transcend. Keep in mind that the group was Grammy nominated as the single, "Typical," climbed Billboard and K-Rock charts. The decision to supersede past successes was made in summer 2008.

They began by scrapping two-and-a-half years' worth of writing—a good chunk of their sophomore release. As a result, Paul Meany, Darren King, Greg Hill and Roy Mitchell-Cardenas are in a full-out, frenzied collaboration to get their second album out by August 2009.

Mute Math's journey is off to a promising start. So far, they still produce good alternative music set apart by great ambient sampling. It will be interesting to see if the deadline is met and whether the outcome meets critic and band member expectations. B+ | Lauren Beckerle
