devotchkawebsite_72dpi.jpg“Buzz” can be quite misleading. Record labels have departments devoted to it, public relations companies create it for a living, bloggers artificially inflate it, careers often live and die by it. After a while, you learn to tune out buzz like static on the radio. Every so often buzz comes too late. In the case of DeVotchKa, the buzz didn’t hit until the soundtrack of a successful film was based around a single epic song, 50,000 sold albums into their career. Acclaimed film Little Miss Sunshine did not make the band famous, but it has triggered a continuing rush toward the unsigned eclecticism of DeVotchKa.

The band absorbs influences, distorts expectation, and revels in its own strange world, whether on originals from How It Ends or their fantastic covers record Curse Your Little Heart. On the latter, they range from Sinatra to the Velvet Underground and back, never sounding like anything but themselves. And maybe Morrissey now and then. Live, they pile more instruments on stage than a Junior High Orchestra’s year-end yard sale. Luckily, they play them more like Calexico covering the Smiths. If that sounds as interesting to you as it is does me, you shouldn’t miss seeing the spectacle in person. | Aaron Brummet

shewantsrevengewebsite_72dpi.jpgFans of the dark synth-pop and brooding beats crafted by Los Angeles duo She Wants Revenge have Easy E to thank. The place: An L.A. backyard of a mutual friend. Adam 12 was asked to DJ the party; it was one of his first gigs with his own turntables. And he pulled out the Easy E.

“Justin [Warfield] came up to ask what I was playing,” explained Adam. But the duo wasn’t solidified yet. “We bounced ideas off each other through the years, but were always involved in other projects.” It took a second barbeque and a friend’s urging for the two to finally try creating music together.

“He came over to my house and I played him some songs that I had,” explained Justin. “And then a year later, I actually wasn’t involved in a project.” Within five months, they had the first She Wants Revenge songs.

Though their rapid rise to popularity seems almost predestined, initially the two had set their sights much lower. “We just wanted to play our beats in the clubs where we DJ’d,” said Adam. The two envisioned touring up and down the California coast, playing DJ gigs, mixing in their own beats and occasionally their own songs.
