Each song drips with melancholy and introspection reminiscent of Neil Young in "Old Man."

A distant, almost icy feeling lingers like a fog in Past Life Crashing, Collin Herring's third offering. The soft acoustic intro of tracks such as "Cellophane" and "Beside" aches of loneliness, as do the breathy vocal lines. Despite a healthy infusion of rock elements to the album, Past Life Crashing remains solidly entrenched in country roots and the solitary musings of a shattered man.

Even with a solid lineup of talented musicians lending their gifts to the album, it is Herring's introspective and poignant lyrics that prove to be Past Life Crashing's biggest strength. Each song drips with melancholy and introspection reminiscent of Neil Young in "Old Man." In "Punches," he explores our fascination with others' failures, singing, "Everybody's hoping/ for another downfall/ to happen to someone/ so they can have a good time/ loving other people's problems."

The album takes a strange turn with the tracks "Overhear" and"Dishes," the latter featuring experimental electronic elements and a bizarre vocal delivery. It is a bit of a stretch, even for an artist as multifaceted as Herring.

The final verdict: For many people, Past Life Crashing will be their introduction to Collin Herring. The lyrical content and excellent musicianship will certainly win Herring a place in the listener's regular rotation. A | Josh Vise
