Digg!

Composed of Danny Seim, Justin Harris, and Brent Knopf, Menomena most recently released the fantastic Friend and Foe on Barsuk Records. Friend and Foe has an incredibly well-crafted, big and unique sound, due in part to the use of a computer program known as Deeler (used for looping and such). That said, it must be mentioned that Menomena is not an electronic band. Their pop-weirdness sound (and vocals) can be compared at points to TV on the Radio.

I recently caught up with one-third of Menomena, Danny Seim, via email. In this short interview, Danny answers pressing questions about a pug, a bathtub, and perhaps glory holes.

So, you are finishing up a European tour and heading to the Midwest. That must make for quite the excitement. Will you be exploring the wonder that is the Gateway to the Midwest?

Sadly enough, our "exploring" on these exotic international tours is usually restricted to using the bathrooms at highway rest stops. Always an adventure, though. FYI, don't use the stalls with the unusual holes at waist level. Let's just say they weren't made by woodpeckers. Wait a minute, on second thought...

Can we talk about the pug? I had a pug named Izzy. She is now deceased and looked pretty much exactly like the little guy/gal from your posters. Could you please tell me a tale of the pug?

Geddy Lee is my daughter, even though she's five years older than me (in canine years). She is a beautiful little slice of God's handiwork. I love her more than I love myself.

Where are you right now? Describe your surroundings.

I am sitting in our van outside Kilby Court in Salt Lake City, Utah. Kilby Court is a little all-ages venue where we've played once before, a couple years ago. My dad was born in Salt Lake City. I sadly have no other useful information about this place. The people are sure nice, though!

In most of your press photos, the band appears in a bathtub. Is that the image you want to project: that of a band that bathes? Together?

That was last Christmas. I haven't had a bath since. Well, at least one that refreshing.

What has everyone been listening to during the tour?

Each other whining, snoring, and vomiting.

What other Portland bands should I listen to right now?

Everclear, The Dandy Warhols, and Quarterflash. | Jaffa Aharonov
