The Luna Brothers' follow-up to their miniseries Ultra kicks off with a bang.

Normally, when I've had a few too many and make an ass out of myself at the local bar, all I have to show for it the next morning is an angry dwarf pounding on an anvil directly behind my eyeballs. When Ethan, ostensible protagonist of the Luna Brothers' (Ultra) new comic Girls, gets tossed out of his local bar he winds up meeting a beautiful, naked woman standing in the middle of the road. Like a classical hero of the myths common to all cultures, Ethan has met the goddess and nothing can ever be the same again. I should be so lucky. Mind you, this goddess mimics speech like a parrot, is pursued by evil rednecks, might be guilty of murder, and isn't quite human, so the jury is still out on Ethan's luck. Beautiful art, believable dialogue, and -- topping off the second issue -- possibly one of the weirdest cliffhangers ever have made this comic a hot item.

Tired of superheroes and boring slice-of-life comics? Do yourself a favor, get to your local shop, and buy either of these issues while you can still get in on the ground floor. If not, wait for the trade. I guarantee it's worth it. | Greg O'Driscoll
