Truth be told, there’s really nothing about the song that says, “Hey you- I’m a man! Now don’t laugh at me!”
There’re many things that malign the dark side of the soul: greed; anger; leaving bad tips. But for your’s truly, there’s one more aspect that defines the evil yang: singing cheerleaders.
“Hey Mickey” is probably one of my all-time favorite songs. From the sing-along intro, to the peppy chorus, even to Tony Basil’s uncomfortably obvious ploys to get some action (“Any way you wanna do it/ I’ll take it like a man”), the song just plain does something for me.
However, I can’t recall a time I was listening to it in the car and didn’t turn it down at a stoplight. Truth be told, there’s really nothing about the song that says, “Hey you- I’m a man! Now don’t laugh at me!” Quite honestly, I was debating whether or not I should put my real name on this post. But then again, who says Drew Stewart is my real name anyway?…
All things considered though, I will continue to listen to “Hey Mickey,” albeit in my room, with all the lights out, the door locked, Spike TV on and with a more macho song playing just a little bit louder. Sometimes you just have to embrace the dark side. |Drew Stewart
